Golf Course Information
Taking a page from the past, Weiskopf has created an Arizona masterpiece set in the middle of Sedona's dramatic red rocks. A throwback to some of the great golf courses designed in the early 1900s, Seven Canyons is not long by modern standards, measuring 6,746 yards from the championship tees and playing to a par of 70.
Located on approximately 200 acres surrounded by stunning red rocks and 100,000 acres of protected national forest land, Seven Canyons puts a premium on exceptional shot-making with small greens, narrow landing areas, classic-style bunkering, mature trees, natural water features and constant changes in elevation. And for golf purists, the best news of all is that the golf course is very walkable.
Incorporating a "core golf" concept that minimizes buildings adjacent to the golf course, Weiskopf was challenged by a parcel of land thought by some to be too small for a truly great championship layout.
Similar in many ways to the great courses of yesteryear such as Pine Valley, Merion, Shinnecock Hills, Winged Foot and San Francisco Golf Club, Seven Canyons was hand-crafted by Weiskopf who visited northern Arizona more than 40 times during the course's construction.
"The design of Seven Canyons was a labor of love," Weiskopf said. "When I first saw the property it took my breath away. Words do not give Seven Canyons justice. The challenge was to create a golf course that looked like it has been there for 100 years, and that was the most compelling reason I accepted the assignment."
Designing the course without any working drawings, Weiskopf created a memorable test that actually benefited from the space limitations. "The character of the site forced us to create a course that is strategic in nature, taking the driver out of the hands of the accomplished player tackling the course from the back tees on some holes."
As a result, Seven Canyons' true hallmarks are its beauty, shot requirements and overall personality, Weiskopf said, adding, "I can confidently say it is as good of a site as I have ever had to work with in Arizona. In time, it will certainly prove itself to be one of my best in the entire state."
