THE WIGWAM GOLF CLUB ANNOUNCES 50TH ANNIVERSARY TIME CAPSULE EVENT
Newly renovated Gold course now open following three-month collaboration between JDM and Tom Lehman
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Gold and Patriot Courses at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Arizona. As part of the legendary resort's continued efforts to renovate and enhance the property, the famed Gold course nicknamed the "Arizona Monster" for its well-known length and degree of difficulty, underwent an extensive renovation this summer.
In collaboration between property owner JDM and Tom Lehman, former British Open champion and winner of numerous PGA TOUR events, the project included a thoughtful redesign concentrating on the intent of Robert Trent Jones, Sr.'s original design.
Focused on a complete bunker renovation, the project touched every hole including enhancements to fairway lines. In addition, all course bunkers now include a more traditional approach featuring white sand and a sod-down design.
"With Tom Lehman's assistance, the Gold Course continues to stand among the nation's finest," said Leo Simonetta, director of The Wigwam Golf Club. "With this update, the course is more playable for the average golfer while continuing to challenge even the most accomplished player."
The Gold Course has played host to numerous signature tournaments such as the U.S. Open Qualifier, U.S. Amateur Qualifier, several NCAA Regional Championships and the annual Patriot All-America Invitational, one of the top amateur competitions in the world. The 7,430 yard, par 72 course has also received numerous industry awards and accolades since opening in 1965, including "Top 100" golf courses in America.
The course officially reopened on Monday, October 19. With its new design and the expertise of its superintendent, Jason Snyder, The Wigwam Golf Club looks forward to presenting a great golf course this winter.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary and this Gold course milestone, resort management is planning a special event in early December featuring a time capsule burial to capture The Wigwam Golf's past and look forward to its future.
The Wigwam, one of Arizona's oldest and most acclaimed hotels, has been recognized as one of the top 25 resorts in Texas and the Southwest, according to Conde Nast's most recent annual survey, released earlier this week. Besides offering 54 holes of championship golf on-site, The Wigwam is an iconic Arizona landmark and AAA Four-Diamond resort offering 440 acres on an estate-like setting. With 331 casita-style guest rooms, the 26,000 square-foot Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa, four pools with two twisting water slides and five restaurants and bars, including Red's Bar & Grill, The Wigwam invites guests to create new traditions and lasting memories during their stay.
